Look Who's Spelling Now! Kindergarten Edition

Hi there, welcome to my class!

In this lesson we will introduce three stages; how students can begin to recognize word patterns through letters/sounds and begin to spell them all on their own, over time.

STAGE 1
We will review and discuss level 2 of a simple technique called Phonemic Awareness, by identifying the sounds of these key letters (a,b,c,f,h,m,n,t,p,r) using flashcards. This technique is an absolute core step that needs to be reinforced in order to create positive reading habits in children.

STAGE 2
After reviewing the letters & their sounds in stage 1; we will then focus on Segmenting & Blending them into CVC Words. This will be done through a fun activity where I will use the robot arm technique to model and teach children how to break up (segment) words, for e.g. C - A - T, followed by another illustration of how to blend the same word. I will ensure that students get an opportunity to participate by providing them with new letters (that form CVC words) to blend on their own. This will definitely encourage learning and engagement.

STAGE 3
Now we SPELL! By reviewing the activities from stage 1 & 2, each student will now have an awareness of how to identify and sound out certain letters into CVC words. Therefore, their knowledge will be put to the test through a quick game of spelling. I will initiate a Speed Game with students using the same letters from stage one, this way they will have a visual representation of the letters and sounds to be able to IDENTIFY and SPELL their new word on the spot :-)

No prior knowledge is needed to join this class; each concept will be reviewed step by step.
