Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
This course is designed to be a more extended look at the topic of long division. It is great for students who are new to the topic, or those who took my Long Division Champ Camp course already and are looking for more practice on the topic!

Long division can be one of the more complex and confusing topics covered in elementary math. This course allows students to work through this intimidating topic in a fun, safe environment. I believe students will be the most successful when they feel comfortable and are interested and engaged with the material. By becoming math champions, students will gain confidence and self-assuredness in their math abilities that they will carry with them in future classroom endeavors. Students should know basic multiplication facts and how to do standard division prior to this course, otherwise this may be a bit too tricky for them. The class is structured as follows:

~Week 1
-Learners are introduced to the concept of long division. We will review the names of the parts of a long division problem, and work through some problems together. Students will also have the opportunity to work on problems independently to test their skills. There will be a few word problems as well to solidify the skills covered. This class will be focused on basic long division with no remainders

~Week 2
-Learners will build off of their skills learned the previous week by approaching the topic of long division with remainders. This course will not broach the topic of long division with decimals, for work on this topic please see my 1-on-1 Elementary and Middle Math listing. Class will follow a similar structure as the week before, with teacher guided demos, example problems to work as a group, and independent practice problems

~Week 3
-This class is a culmination of the previous two classes. Students will get a chance to practice all of the skills they have learned through group and independent practice activities. This class will also include some challenge problems; problems that are slightly more difficult than the ones in the previous two classes, to truly test their knowledge. These problems may be presented in the form of a game, and this class is meant to solidify the learning and encourage continued practice after the class is over.
Learning Goals
Learners will feel more confident and gain the skills necessary to independently complete long division problems with and without remainders

Other Details

Parental Guidance
There is a possibility that, if time permits, learners may play a review game on Kahoot!. Parental guidance may be required if your student is younger, or you would feel more comfortable participating with them in the game. Students are not required to participate in the game if it is offered, and they will be given an alternate assignment to allow them to review as well if they would prefer to not play or watch the other learners play the game.
Supply List
Students may use Kahoot for review games if time permits in class. Otherwise, learners will only need something to write with and something to write on for each class meeting.

Hello! My name is Unity, it's so great to meet you!

I have a BA with majors and minors in English, Asian Studies, Astrophysics, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. I have an MLitt with Distinction in Scottish Heritage with concentrations in Scottish Literature and Education.

I absolutely love teaching, and much of my volunteer and professional career has been spent working with children in an educational setting. Altogether I have been working as a teacher and tutor for 8 years now, and most recently earned my TEFL Certification to teach English online, as well as completed my IELTS Teacher Training! I have taught classes in English, Literacy and Language Arts, Physics, Geometry, Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Japanese, Women's Studies, Writing, Environmental Science, and more to students of all ages (4-35+).

I believe learning should be fun and exciting and I want to bring that same energy to my classroom. Students should be enthusiastic about the topic and I hope to instill in them the knowledge that making mistakes is part of learning and NOT something to feel ashamed of. My classes are engaging and I strive to make real connections with all of my students. My teaching philosophy is that students will remember the material better, and for longer, if they had fun while learning it!

Literacy is my passion and I am currently working towards my MLIS (Master's of Library and Information Sciences) degree. I find so much joy in fostering and encouraging a love of books and reading in students of all ages. From young learners who benefit from help with phonics and grammar, to older students who love book clubs and learning more about librarianship, getting children excited about reading is what inspires me on a daily basis.

When I'm not teaching or reading, I absolutely love to travel! I studied abroad in Japan, Ireland, and Northern Ireland during my undergraduate program, and have traveled independently to over 10 different countries and islands. I even moved to Scotland and lived there while completing my dissertation! I have a very playful and talkative cat named Emma who loves to cuddle, corydoras catfish, and a beehive that I love.

I am so excited to be here teaching! Hope to see you in my classroom (:
