Class Experience

During this session, we will look at various Logical Fallacies that exist in arguments. We will learn how to find, break down and remove fallacies from our own writing and speech such as Circular Reasoning, Ad Hominem, Ad Baculum, Red Herring, Slippery Slope and Hasty Generalization.

Session will begin with a very brief introduction to Socrates, Aristotle and Plato, their contributions to modern logic and understanding of the term Aristotelian logic.

Class is run using slides and instructor will show images from ads and written material and explain the logical fallacies before expecting students to find them in examples.

Students must be proficient readers to participate. No other prior knowledge is needed.
Class will be structured in a Socratic Seminar style with discussion encouraged from participants.

Hello! I'm Shaheen and I look forward to meeting you all virtually. I've been teaching language arts and the humanities for over 25 years in public, private and charter schools to elementary, middle and high school students. I also homeschool my own four children, and I am an education consultant for other homeschooling families. My expertise is in teaching the humanities and literature classes for middle and high school aged kids. I offer classes in the Socratic Seminar style for kids as young as 4th graders. Holding an M.S. in Education and a certification in teaching ESL, I am happy to bring the love of learning to your kids.
My goals, with teaching students, are to make them life long learners and passionate about education. I enjoy teaching poetry, literature, logic and the classics and I hope to pass this love of language on to my students!
