Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
This class will introduce students to some of the fundamentals of critical thinking. We'll begin very generally by exploring what critical thinking is and why it matters. Then we'll look into some more specific areas, particularly the following:

-What arguments are
-The components of an argument (premises and conclusions)
-Evaluating arguments (validity and soundness)
-A sampling of some valid argument forms
-Some of the most common fallacies (i.e., mistakes in reasoning) to avoid

Near the end of the session, time permitting, we'll also discuss some strategies for maintaining productive discussions between people who disagree about something.

By the session's end, students will be more prepared to think critically about any topic they choose.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
In any class on critical thinking, there looms large the backdrop of our society's disagreement about myriad political, religious, and philosophical issues. The importance of navigating such disagreements thoughtfully, polarized as they tend to be, is one key reason why the study of critical thinking is worthwhile. I've taken care not to choose politicized examples of arguments, fallacies, and so on for the slideshow. However, as this class includes moments for students to offer their own input and examples, it's possible that one or more students will bring such arguments up. If that happens, then, while I myself will remain neutral on such arguments' conclusions, I will allow the arguments to be aired and briefly discussed, provided that the students do so respectfully. This is because I believe that philosophical education ought to be conducted in a spirit of open-mindedness, an open-mindedness which includes being willing to discuss and critically examine any course-relevant argument students bring up.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Some of the class's examples of arguments, fallacies, etc. come from Lewis Vaughn's textbook, *The Power of Critical Thinking*. Near the end of the slideshow, there's a slide with some suggested further reading for any interested students. This slide mentions both the textbook above and *The New Critical Thinking: An Empirically Informed Introduction*, by Jack Lyons and Barry Ward.
