Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this fun class, students will brainstorm, practice (on paper), and draw or paint positive images and words on up to three rocks with the intention of giving them away.
We will discuss possibilities of to whom (grandparents, neighbors, etc.,), and how (place on porch, set out on sidewalk or walking path).
Students may bring their own ideas as well!
My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective.
My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time!
At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is.

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need:
Practice paper (like copy machine paper), pencils, erasers for practice.
Metallic markers (optional) are beautiful and usually work well for writing on rocks (such as gold, silver and copper Sharpies)
Acrylic markers (optional) are SUPER easy to use on rocks! Inexpensive sets can be found online.
Acrylic paint in any color(s), and finishes, including metallic, flat, satin, multi-surface--whatever you can get!
Small (size 1, 2, and 3 are ideal) craft or artist paint brushes; size 7 or larger brush is great for painting a solid background color.
Water, newspaper, paper towels.
ROCKS: **IMPORTANT** PLEASE, either select rocks from outside that are 2-4" in diameter that are SMOOTH, and wash and dry them in advance, or purchase a bag of large tumbled (polished) rocks at Michael's. These can be found in the floral department.
Another option is a landscaping company or big box hardware store that carries loose landscaping rock. Pioneer Landscaping near me, for example, will sell single rocks that are 3-4" in diameter that are machine-smoothed.
Rocks that are rough, jagged, pitted, etc. will be VERY difficult to paint details on and therefore cause a lot of frustration.

As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
