Week 1Lesson 1Painting the BackgroundWe will use several sheets of SMALL (4X5-ish) watercolor paper (8X10, 9X12, or 11X14 paper can be cut smaller prior to class), so students can experiment with different colors, amounts of water, mixing techniques, etc.Week 2Lesson 2Painting the LandscapeWe will add stars and landscape forms to previously painted and dried galaxy paintings.
As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down painting lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
Students will need: Watercolor paper (1-2 sheets of 8X10, 9X12 or 11X14, pre-cut into 4 equal pieces). We will definitely paint 3-4 pieces during the first class session, and more during the 3rd and 4th sessions. I recommend Canson brand. Watercolor paint: I recommend Crayola, Prang or Sargent Art in the oval pans, OR the kind that comes in small tubes. Paint brushes (variety: I like round, size 6 or 7 for this project, plus round, size 2 or 3 for small details). **PLEASE** Make sure you have watercolor paper and good quality watercolor paints. Other papers, especially cardstock, are not surface treated for watercolor and will cause the student to become frustrated. Likewise, acrylic paints do not work well for this because they will not flow like watercolor. Only one color of acrylic paint needed: White, for painting stars in the galaxy.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
