Class experience
This class is geared toward students who already have the ability to draw their own animals (they will get to choose their animal), as the guided instruction will be around how to blend the paint for the background and how to apply the drawing and painting materials for drawing the animals. 3 lessons//3 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Painting the BackgroundWe will paint the background with blue, white and black acrylic paints. While painting, students will think about their favorite animals, what traits are most appealing to them, and consider their favorite animal for the drawing.Week 2Lesson 2Drawing the Patron AnimalStudents will practice drawing their chosen animal. Having printed images and/or google search images available for study and copy is strongly recommended. Teacher help will be available as needed.Week 3Lesson 3Finishing the ArtWe will redraw the animal on the painting with pencil and trace with a paint marker (strongly recommended; see materials list. Then we will use white chalk to blend around the outside of the animal to give a mysterious, wispy effect.
Printed images of animal (from Google search, see description above) Newspaper or plastic tablecloth to keep surface clean when painting Old shirt or apron to protect clothing when painting Sketchbook or inexpensive (printer) paper to practice drawing Pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener White colored pencil (from a set, or white Prismacolor can be purchased separately at Michaels) inexpensive acrylic paints in tubes, in blue, white and black. I found tubes at Walmart for less than $2 apiece. An alternative is acrylic craft paint in the bottles found at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and the craft department in many stores. Wide, flat paintbrushes (sets of brushes for acrylic painting can be found at Walmart for less than $5. White paint marker. I found Sharpies in the same aisle as the paint for a little over $2. OR, acrylic paint marker--these are more expensive and found at Michael's. Alternative can be a silver Sharpie. Regular white chalkboard chalk. I found a box of 12 Crayola white chalks at Dollar Tree. For the final painting, any heavy paper, such as watercolor paper, Bristol board, or even cardboard can be used. An alternative is canvas or canvas panel. I use 8X10 watercolor paper for this project. Clear acrylic spray fixative OR hairspray
