US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
In this wonderful four week long journey, your child will be taught: yoga postures, sing songs, participate in mindfulness activities, dabble with meditation and begin to understand how the breath can help control big feelings. This course is built to promote stress relief, improve flexibility, increase strength and most importantly, have fun! Week 1: We will cover the meaning of yoga, meditation and pranayama (breath techniques). Children will learn how and why we should meditate. They willl be introduced to several beginner yoga poses, participate in a mindfulness activity & learn how to relax their bodies during, "Peaceful Garden", a resting portion of our practice to promote deep relaxation. Week 2: Your child will begin to learn new poses, incorporate more breathing techniques, participating in yoga activities to promote mindfulness and discuss meditation. Children will participate in a (short) Peaceful Garden and before closing the class they will be asked if they would like to share their thoughts with their classmates. Week 3: We will review what was taught during Week 1 & 2 and build upon it. Your child will learn more: poses, breathing techniques, and a new meditation. They will participate in a yoga song/activity to promote mindfulness and movement. Children will then be guided into a (short) Peaceful Garden and before closing the class they will be asked if they would like to share their thoughts with their classmates. Week 4: We will review the previous week's sessions and continue to build upon them. Your child will participate in balance poses and learn a short yoga flow. They will enjoy a fun yoga based activity and story filled with poses. Children will then be guided into a (short) Peaceful Garden and before closing the class they will be asked if they would like to share their thoughts about anything learned or if they have any questions. *Each passing week will build on the previous, however there will be a short review of what we learned to allow the children a chance to really grasp the concepts and should they have missed a class, they will have a chance to understand the concepts missed.
Learning Goals
Student's should finish this 4 week course with a better understanding of the true meaning of yoga. They will have been taught strategies to use when feeling anxious, overly excited or sad. If your child spends time outside of class practicing yoga postures (poses), by the end of this course they should also have improved flexibility and increased their strength and become more self confident.
