6 in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will learn through a guided discussion on the novel. Each discussion will serve to ensure that students fully understand the material. We will discuss important aspects of the book and break down the language used. This class is meant to be similar to a book club! Students are encouraged to make notes of anything they don't understand, or would like to talk about. Whether they would like to analyze an element of the book further or just mention something that made them laugh, all comments are welcome! The last four classes we will be watching a film adaptation of the novel (students will get to choice between the 1994 and 2019 adaptations). This will be used to solidify student understanding of the novel. While watching the film students will be asked to keep an eye out for inconstancies between the film and novel. The movie will be paused at ten minute intervals to discuss what similarities or differences the students noticed, and their opinions in regards to them. The weeks will be broken down as follows: Week 1 - Chapters 1-10 Discussion Topics: Week 2 - Chapters 11-20 Discussion Topics: Week 3 - Chapters 21-30 Discussion Topics: Week 4 - Chapters 22-40 Discussion Topics: Week 5 - Chapters 41-47 Discussion Topics: Week 6-9 - Film
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is to develop the student's understanding of Louisa May Alcott's work in a fun, relaxed environment.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
During the last half of the class I will be showing a film adaptation of the book. Students will choose to either watch the 1994 adaptation directed by Gillian Armstrong, or the 2019 adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig. Both films are rated PG.
Supply List
Students will need their own copy of Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women'. Prices vary. The reading is broken down into chapters so that students can use different versions of the novel, however, I strongly suggest the PageTurners edition as it has a SparkNotes Reader's Companion in the back of the book to help with reader understanding. I will be using the PageTurners edition published in 2004. ISBN: 1-58288-077-8 There is a free e-text version of the book at https://www.gutenberg.org/files/514/514-h/514-h.htm - However, I prefer that students have a hardcopy of the text to make discussion easier.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Miss Lamphere. I teach Social Studies classes at the Middle and High School levels. I have previous teaching experience as a substitute and student teacher. I have taught several History and Geography classes, as well as a Civics and Government class.
My philosophy behind my teaching is that learning should be fun for students, and they should be able to ask any questions they have without worry of being judged.
A fun fact about myself is that I lived in London for a year while studying.
