This will be a fun, hands-on, engaging intro to chemistry class for children from the ages of 3-6 years old. Children will be learning the basics of chemistry and then taking a hands-on approach and creating the experiments in their homes while learning the science behind it! The students will be able to make educated predictions (hypotheses) and observe what occurs in each experiment. Students will be able to discuss what they are seeing and feeling. Students will be true scientists understanding the basic elements of chemistry, gaining knowledge with chemistry vocabulary, and having a fun, hands-on, engaging experience.
I minored in chemistry and have extensive knowledge in the subject matter. I also have incorporated chemistry over the past 10 years while working with students. Other trainings/education I have are: Bachelors degree in Fine Arts and Photography minor in Chemistry, AMS Montessori Teaching Certificate, M. Ed in Global perspective, and ABAR Training
Week 1: Exploding moon dough. Supplies needed: -oil -flour -baking soda -vinegar -pipette or spoon -small bowl or cup & measuring cups -bowl for mixing. (If you want to color your dough, you will also need food coloring and water) Week 2: Magic Milk. Supplies needed: -shallow dish -milk -liquid food coloring (gel food coloring does not work as well, dish soap, q-tips, or cotton balls (Optional: if you want to make a piece of art and have watercolor paper we can imprint what has been created) Week 3: Skittle experiment. Supplies needed: -plate -warm water -skittles (or M&Ms). Week 4: Salt Watercolors. Supplies needed: -Paper -white liquid glue -salt -watercolors -paint brush Week 5: Elephant Toothpaste. Supplies needed: -1 plastic container or bottle -Funnel -Food Coloring -Warm Water -Yeast -1 small mixing containers (condiment cups work great for this or you can use one bowl) -hydrogen peroxide -spoon, measuring spoons and cups -baking sheet or tray or baking pan or container (something to go under the bottles to catch all the mess) Week 6: Walking Rainbow. Supplies needed: -paper towels -food coloring -6 small containers/clear cups -water Week 7: Oobleck. Supplies needed: -Cornstarch -food coloring -bowl -water Week 8: Making ice cream. Supplies needed: -2 ziplock bags -salt (ice cream salt or rock salt works best) -ice -cream (or milk or milk alternative) -vanilla extract -sugar -measuring spoons and cups
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
These are all experiments that students of this age can do by themselves. Because students are younger in this course, parental supervision next to the child, out of sight of the camera, is advised if students need assistance in some instances.
