Homework
1 hour per week. Assignments will be further practice of taught strategies or "next step" challenges which will allow learners to review and consollidate their learning.Assessment
💻 Diagnostic questioning is used at the the start of the course. This is where specific questions are used to assess students' prior knowledge, understanding and misconceptions about a topic before instruction begins. 📋Formative (on-going) assessment are conducted throughout the duration of the course. Weekly tests are administered in class to assess student understanding of the material. In order to cater to all learner needs, these quizzes range from multiple choice, 'fill in the blank', matching, true or false and written/worked questions.Class Experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Welcome to 'Little Mathematicians: Learning Measurement!' a 1:1 math class designed specifically for young learners aged 5-7. In this engaging and interactive class, learners are introduced to the basics of measurement. This unit focuses on developing students' understanding and skills in measuring length, mass, capacity and time. Through a combination of clear modelling, built in fluency practice, hands-on activities, interactive games and personalised instruction, your child will develop a strong foundation in using the metric system, setting them up for future of math success. Topics taught: 📐 Length and Height: Comparing objects by length or height (e.g. which is longer or shorter) using non-standard unit (like paper clips or blocks) and standard units (like centimeters) to measure lengths ⚖️ Weight and Mass: Comparing which objects are heavier or lighter using non-standard units (like blocks) and standard units (like grams) for simple measurements 🫗 Capacity and Volume: Understanding which containers hold more or less and using non-standard units (like cups or spoons) and standard units (like milliliters) to measure liquid capacity ⏰ Time: Recognising and ordering the days of the week, reading time to the hour and half-hour on an analog clock and understanding and discussing routines and sequences of events Taught by a qualified primary school teacher, my aim is to to meet your child’s unique needs and ensure they feel confident and supported throughout the learning process. I believe in making math fun and relatable, turning abstract concepts into tangible, understandable lessons. This is achieved using the concrete-pictorial- abstract process characteristic of the 'Math Mastery' approach. My teaching methods involve interactive instruction using visual aids, slide and video clips to explain concepts clearly; hands-on learning incorporating physical objects and manipulatives for practical understanding; engaging learners through storytelling and games and providing immediate, constructive feedback to tackle misconceptions. Whilst each lesson will focus on a different area of measurement, the general format of the session remains the same and will include: 👩🏻🏫 A Warm-Up Activity: Each session begins with a quick warm-up to engage your child and prepare them for learning. 👩🏻🏫 An Interactive Lesson: A focused, interactive lesson on the day’s topic using slides, video clips, and live demonstrations. 👩🏻🏫 Hands-On Activities: Practical activities using physical objects like toys and blocks to support visualisation. 👩🏻🏫 Fluency Practice: Regular practice of fundamental skills and concepts to reinforce learning and improve speed whilst mantaining accuracy. 👩🏻🏫Games and Challenges: Fun math games and challenges to reinforce the lesson and keep your child engaged. 👩🏻🏫Practice and Review: Guided practice problems and review to solidify understanding. 🧑💻 Interaction is at the heart of Little Mathematicians. Learners will have plenty of opportunities to engage with the teacher through: 1. Live Demonstrations: Where I explain and work through problems step-by-step. 2. Interactive Discussions: Engaging your child in conversation about the concepts being taught. 3. Hands-On Activities: Guiding your child through practical exercises. 4. Games and Challenges: Playing educational games together to reinforce learning. 5. Immediate Feedback: Providing real-time feedback and encouragement during practice activities. By the end of this course, your child will have a solid understanding of measurement and the confidence to tackle more advanced math concepts in the future.
Learning Goals
Compare, describe, and solve practical problems for lengths and heights (e.g., long/short, longer/shorter, tall/short, double/half)
Compare, describe, and solve practical problems for mass/weight (e.g., heavy/light, heavier than, lighter than)
Other Details
Learning Needs
Learning needs are supported through an initial assessment. Visual aids, rhymes and concrete resources are used to support conceptual understanding. Options for enlarged text, audio instructions and closed captioning are also available.
Parental Guidance
Dear Parents and Guardians,
While I strive to create a positive and enjoyable learning environment, I understand that some children may experience 'math anxiety'. Math anxiety can manifest as feelings of stress or fear when faced with mathematical tasks, and it is important to address these feelings early on in order to foster a lifelong love for learning.
What you should know...
🧮 My classes are designed to be supportive and encouraging. I use interactive and playful methods to make addition enjoyable and relatable for young learners.
🛎️ As this is a 1:1 private tutoring session, your child will receive personalised attention suited to their learning pace and style which will help build their confidence.
📩 Please keep an open line of communication with the teacher regarding your child's experiences and feelings towards math. This will help me adapt my teaching methods to better suit their needs.
🏡 Your support at home is crucial! Encouraging a positive attitude towards math and praising your child’s efforts can significantly reduce anxiety.
😟 If your child shows signs of math anxiety, such as avoiding math activities or expressing frustration, please inform the teacher. Together, we can work on strategies to make math a more positive experience for your little one.
On a separate note,
⚠️ Please supervise your child when they are using math manipulatives or scissors to ensure they do not put any small items in their mouth or hurt themselves. Safety is my top priority and your assistance in monitoring their use of these materials is greatly appreciated.
