Description
Class Experience
Students will come away from this class with a colourful and exciting overview of what it is like to travel to our chosen countries. Hopefully this introduction will spark a general curiosity about the world outside of their own country- the people, the food, the language and the wildlife (and more!)
A little about me: I have lived in 7 countries- Australia (my home country), the USA, Canada, Germany, Belgium, the UK, and Tanzania and have visited over 55 more. From the age of ~3 until I was 22, I traveled off the beaten track for 3 months of every year with my father- I guess you could say that I had a pretty 'world school' education. I have continued this tradition with my own kids having taken them to 20 countries already by the ages of 8 and 10. These experiences have shaped who I am today. The countries covered in my classes are all countries I have personally visited and I focus on the aspects of these countries that made them exciting for me as a child and for my children today.
Students will receive a worksheet for every class and will post their completed worksheets in the classroom. One week the students will be encouraged to try and make a recipe at home with adult supervision.
4 files available upon enrollmentThese supplies are for the optional home activities. Week 1: craft paper, scissors, coloured pencils. Optional 'lantern stick' (available in Germany for international shipping https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0044MK532/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_Z2XR6S73ERB1JSMKVX0Q) or regular stick or dowel for holding homemade lantern. You can also add light to your lantern if you are unable to source a 'lantern stick' by attaching an LED operated tea light candle. Please choose LED products that do not have battery openings or that are closed behind a screw closure so that children do not have access to button batteries. Week 2: For the Vietnamese inspired rice paper rolls- 8 sheets of rice paper 50g/1.5 oz of dried vermicelli noodles (you can buy rice paper and vermicelli noodles from the Asian produce section of your grocery store, from an Asian grocery store or online) Various fresh green leafy herbs- I recommend mint, cilantro (corriander), basil (Thai basil if you can find it!) 2 medium carrots thinly sliced 1 medium cucumber thinly sliced Optional extras: Cooked chicken, cooked shrimp, crushed peanuts, avocado, lettuce, red cabbage shredded, bell peppers finely sliced or any other veggie that you love! Optional dipping sauce (nut allergy warning) 4 tablespoons of peanut/almond/cashew butter 1 tablespoon Soy sauce 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar ONLY if your peanut butter has no sugar in it already Juice from half a lime Hot water to thin
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Week 1: Craft activity- students may need parental supervision when handling scissors for our German Lantern craft activity. Week 2: Students will need parental supervision when handling knives or while making noddles in the kitchen. Week 2: Allergy warning: optional dipping sauce for the Vietnamese rice paper rolls contains nuts. You can easily and just as deliciously substitute the dipping sauce with a sauce of your choice E.G soy sauce (contains soy), sweet soy sauce (contains soy) or sweet chilli sauce. All activities requiring parental supervision are optional and not completing them will not diminish your child's experience in this class or their classroom interaction.
