Class Experience

This course is the second lesson sequence in my preschool and early elementary course for Spanish. This course is for students who have completed Unit A and would like to continue their study of Spanish. Subsequent units in the course will be labeled alphabetically by progression (Little Learners Natural Spanish Acquisition Unit C through Little Learner Natural Spanish Acquisition Unit H). This unit is also taught as part of the "Kindergarten Spanish Fun" course that I offer.

Students will meet twice a week for 25-minute sessions. Children will participate in activities, sing songs, read stories, and play games to acquire language in this unit. My goal is to provide fun and plentiful input that feels like play rather than learning.

Children acquire language through consistent exposure to input that they can comprehend. They will hear target structures repeated in context throughout the unit. I will use a lot of Spanish in class and some English to clarify and give directions. My goal is to help them acquire Spanish by using language that they will understand. I will use what they already know, big gestures, expressions, and visuals to support their processing of meaning. This is different from immersion teaching because I will be using a very deliberate and targeted way of speaking to meet novice students at their proficiency level.

Students will hear a lot of Spanish but will not be forced to speak if they are not ready. Most students will want to participate, but please remember that input always precedes output. Students will accurately begin to produce language once they have received enough input to form a mental representation of the language in their minds. Think of how babies and toddlers understand much more than they can say...second language acquisition has a very similar progression!

We will follow this schedule:
Week One: Students will learn to talk about foods and some related high-frequency expressions and verbs.
Target Structures: tiene hambre (is hungry), come (eats), toma (takes/drinks), la manzana (apple), la leche (milk), el pan (bread), el maíz (corn), el agua (water)
We will continue to sing songs from Unit A and will practice the target structures through conversation and stories.

Week Two: Students will learn to express their likes and dislikes.
Target Structures: me gusta (I like), no me gusta (I don't like), ¿Te gusta? (Do you like?) Other vocabulary: foods
We will practice new expressions and vocabulary with stories, conversation, games, and activities.

Week Three: Students will learn to name some colors and understand/use them in context.
Target Structures: rojo (red), anaranjado (orange), amarillo (yellow), verde (green), azul (blue), morado (purple), blanco (white), negro (black), rosa (pink), café (brown), gris (gray), pinta (paints), nada (nothing)
We will practice new expressions and vocabulary with stories, conversations, songs, games, and activities.

Learning Goals
