One photo includes Pa carrying a rifle to hunt for wild game. When discussing this picture, I will include that the safe use of guns is very important, and likely why young children did not accompany adults on hunts. If the topic of racism toward Native Americans comes up, I will teach that discrimination toward Native Americans in the 1800's does not align with how we view people of differing background today. We will discuss encouraging ways to appreciate all of the different people groups in our world.
