Class Experience

Students will demonstrate literary skills such as reading comprehension, restating the question in an answer, story prediction, the ability to relate to characters and events in literature, retelling a story, recreating story elements through art, and the ability to refer to part of a story when retelling or writing about the text. They will demonstrate understanding of story elements such as setting, main characters, plot, and problem/solution.
Students will be expected to read two chapters of the novel each week, and a handful of questions will be provided for each chapter to monitor reading comprehension. Additional art and cooking projects are provided throughout the study, but many are optional and included for a fun experience.
All printable resources will be provided by the teacher, and a weekly outline of assignments and activities will be provided at the start of each week.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Most comprehension will be assessed informally through discussion, but formal assessment of comprehension questions and a final assessment can be provided upon parent request if needed to determine mastery of skills or for personal school records. Please contact the teacher privately if you would like to have assignments graded in this manner!
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
When the topic racism toward Native Americans comes up in the book, we will address how the discrimination that was common toward Native Americans in the 1800's does not align with the respectful manner in which we view people today. We will discuss encouraging ways to appreciate all of the different people groups in our world.
Each learner will need a copy of the book Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The cost of a paperback copy is typically $6-9 on Amazon.com.
