Class Experience

During each class, your child will be introduced to the piano in a way that does not involve them reading music. They will be asked to explore the piano in a variety of ways, be creative and daring.

They will be exposed to the basics of music making. Before week 2, it is vital that you purchase the star stickers to put on your piano and copy the music I send you a photo of. The company ship worldwide, therefore it will make all lessons the same following the same coloured notation.

These first few weeks are designed to be a prequel to the more structured lessons of reading music.

Your child will be encouraged to sing also, as the voice is the basis of any music making. It will raise their confidence if they are shy and inward. However, there is no rule book and if your child doesn't enjoy expressing his / herself in that way, I will not force them!

My own journey with music brought me from a poor working class background, where my Grandad taught me the piano. He taught me to love and feel music. I did not progress with exams due to my family circumstances. However, this did not stop me from applying to the University of Durham to read music. An audition recognised my ability and thus my lack of exams did not hinder my progression - my access to a fantastic teacher taught me technique.

Therefore, in my experience of teaching young children - I welcome children who want to learn for fun rather than feeling under pressure to do music exams. Once a student is well established in the study of piano, they will choose to progress because they love the instrument and they feel confident.

Week 1: sounds on the piano - soft, loud, short, long, white and black keys. Stone on the mountain technique - round hand shape. Bring a stone or cube to place on your hand! Tap your knees to the pulse of the nursery rhyme 'twinkle twinkle' by Mozart. Play with your fingertips and be a bumble bee on the piano - play along to an animated flight of the bumble bee! Begin to look at rhythm and how we play it. Colour with 'notation' bumblebee for an activity at home after the lesson.

week 2: Mary Had a Little Lamb notated music matched with the stars on your piano. nursery rhyme singing. Music appreciation: The Sleeping Beauty Waltz by Tchaikovsky.

week 3: Recap Mary had a little lamb. Jingle bells music star notation. Music appreciation: The Sorceror's Apprentice by Dukas - Fantasia animation.

week 4: twinkle twinkle little star and recap. Music appreciation: Dance of the sugar plum fairy by Tchaikovsky - play along with the rhythm.

Sections commence from:

Wednesday 6th January - 27th January (6.30pm London Time)

Wednesday 27th January - 17th February (6pm London Time)

Wednesday February 3rd - 24th February (6.30pm London Time)

Your child will want to learn more and progress further if they enjoy what they are doing. Therefore, my classes are very playful and fun!

I hope to see you on the other side!

Many thanks

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a UK qualified teacher of 19 years with 4 years of online teaching experience. I have taught a variety of subjects including basic reading and writing, musical mathematics, music, geography, drawing and cake decorating to name a few.

I absolutely love to teach children in ways that are fun and engaging, rather than the textbook norm. I believe children learn best when they are having fun and feel safe - all of which I encourage in my classes. No child will be left behind and all children will be involved if they wish to be.

I look forward to meeting your children from my home here in the UK.
