Little Explorers' Travel Summer Camp: Hispanic Culture in Mexico
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Let's trek through Mexico, off the beaten path! In this week-long summer camp, students will learn about Mexican life and culture from an eye-witness perspective. We'll touch on history of various regions, customs, foods, traditions, wildlife, and languages. To make classes fun and interactive, each lesson features: -a full-length, custom-designed slide presentation on Nearpod -Spanish and Native language review games on Nearpod -a Jeopardy review game, custom-designed -printable handout...
Students will expand their knowledge of various aspects of Mexican culture across several regions. They will also learn some basic Spanish in each class.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Language Education. I have spoken Spanish for 18 years. I lived in Mexico for 6 years, where I personally visited the regions we will study. I hold a TEFL certificate. I have taught foreign language online since 2014.
Homework Offered
Homework is optional for this class. I will provide printouts for students, in the virtual classroom, each day, if they wish to print out worksheets as an additional activity. I personally design all printout activities.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Students will not need anything special for this class. They will only need a working electronic device that can operate both Zoom and the Nearpod website. I recommend that students bring a pencil and a notebook to class, to write down new vocabulary.
Please note that I use Nearpod for my lessons. Nearpod is a website that allows teachers to create slide presentations with interactive activities for students. A link will be provided via the Zoom chat box during the live class to access Nearpod. I will also provide the necessary 5 digit code to access the lesson. If students wish, I can also provide them with a link to access the lesson on their own time after class. I may use Kahoot in this class. or I may not. Kahoot is a website where teachers design quiz games for students to test their knowledge and review what they've learned. If I use Kahoot in class, I will provide students with the necessary link and Game PIN to access the Kahoot game. I will also include this information in the virtual classroom, for students who wish to play the Kahoot game at a later time. I also use YOUTUBE videos in this class. The videos are less than two minutes, and they are embedded in the actual lesson. Students will not need to navigate to the YouTube website to see these videos. Each video I use is a virtual tour of a different location in Mexico, or a shot video of the Maya football game called Pok-ta-Pok. These videos add new meaning to these things that just can't be fully expressed through reading. However, we will not spend an excessive amount of class time viewing videos. As mentioned, each class has 1 video that lasts 2 minutes. The lesson about Palenque has 2 brief videos, one being about the Maya football game. Please note that I cannot provide Zoom links for students to enter the session. Outschool does not allow this. ***************************** TECHNOLOGY NOTE Children should be able to handle technological functions like accessing the Zoom chat box, turning on or off their microphone on Zoom, clicking a link to open the Nearpod website, navigating to the Nearpod website, and opening a new tab on their internet browser to see the Nearpod website. They should be able to click answers to questions on their screens. It would also be good for them to know how to navigate between Zoom and an external website, since they'll need to do this during class to participate in the Nearpod games. **************************** SKILLS REQUIRED Students need to be able to read to participate in this class.
Hi, I'm Sarah! I've taught children online since 2014, and I'm excited to meet your kids! I lived and trekked around Mexico (and a bit in Guatemala) for 7 years. I'm looking forward to bringing my experience to the classroom when I teach about...
