Description

Class Experience

In this 2nd grade Language Arts, course students will improve their independent reading, comprehension, and writing skills through five literature books, weekly vocabulary, grammar, and writing lessons.
Through my experience gained in the classroom for 16 years, I will guide discussions to help students focus on positive and admirable characteristics found in the books we read while building their confidence and comprehension skills.
Students will be expected to read all required assignments discussed before each class meeting. Other optional homework will be provided to enhance the student's learning experience. These will be uploaded at the beginning of each book unit and should take between 1-2 hours to complete (including the reading). Each packet will include an assignment sheet and due dates.
Optional assignments will include comprehension and deeper thinking questions paired with the book, short writing practices, and grammar review sheets.
Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik Doctor DeSoto by William Steig The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder 3-Ring binder with loose-leaf paper (printables will be provided throughout the class, so a 3-hole punch would also be helpful) Pens or pencils Occasionally, students will need other supplies for projects, but notification will be sent out at least a week in advance.
Reading Comprehension will be graded through participation and informal assessments during discussion.
Grammar and optional completed comprehension questions (from homework) will be graded for accuracy.
Writing and special projects will be assessed using a rubric, and feedback will be provided for improvement Special projects will be graded for accuracy and completion.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
