Class Experience

In this one time class we will go through the process from sketch to finished artwork using oil pastels to paint a bird in the style of the illustrations in my children’s book Little Birder.
In the first portion of class we will quickly touch on the drawing of the bird for the painting, (I recommend taking my one time class- Draw Realistic Birds to learn the fundamentals of drawing birds, but it is not required) as well as learn about the oil pastels. We will practice various techniques and styles used with oil pastels.
In the second half we will take our prepared sketch and I will lead students as we paint our bird in a directed painting so they can see the process and follow along.

Class times for this class are not always scheduled, but the class is available. If you don’t see a class time listed or that works for your schedule, please click "SHOW ALTERNATIVE TIMES" or "REQUEST A CLASS" just above the description, and feel free to schedule one of the available times for a class to suit your needs.

*Students may not finish their artwork completely within the hour of our class. Please show up on time and prepared so that we can make the most of the short class. If you arrive late or unprepared, the class will still end at the scheduled time.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the process of loose- style painting with oil pastel from sketch to finished artwork and gain a basic knowledge of the oil pastel medium.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a lifelong artist and more recently, the author and illustrator of an award winning children's book called Little Birder. It is a non-fiction alphabet book about birds.
I am inspired by the curiosity that comes naturally to children which I have to work diligently to cultivate as an adult. I wanted to create a beautiful resource that encourages children to be curious and observe the world around them. (Ask for information.)

The best thing about being an artist is that art can go hand in hand with just about any topic. Many of my classes will involve nature and observation. Character building skills like curiosity, observation, expressing emotions through art are just some of the skills that are incorporated into my art lessons.

I also like to help kids who are ready to begin mastering art and observation skills gain confidence in themselves through teaching methods that improve the results of their art.
I help kids realize anyone can be an artist and help improve their skills with a few “tricks.” Tricks like anatomy and proportions, seeing negative space, and recognizing underlying shapes. I love watching as kids improve drastically in just one lesson, and gain the confidence in their skill that will become the foundations of their creativity through art.
My art classes are fun, but they're best for students who are passionate about improving their art skills.
