Class Experience

An ongoing baking course inspired by the magical world. From crafting pointy hats to magical monster bakes, we'll cook tasty recipes that would impress any witch or wizard.

We will start class with a couple of minutes of introductions, making sure that everyone knows each other's names. We will then check that we have the correct ingredients and equipment, and have clean hands and a clean work surface. We will go through the recipe step by step, so that all learners can follow along. Ingredients will need to be measured before class, to leave learners enough time for each step. By the end of class, learners will know how to follow and complete the recipe. Please be aware, recipes may not always be completed in the 30 minute live class session. Sometimes the food will need additional heating or cooling time, or decoration steps will need to be finished.

These recipes are adapted from my Junior Bakers and Teen Bakers Magical Cooking Classes, which feature many of the same finished products, but are longer classes and feature more baking from scratch. In order for the recipes to be achievable for my Little Bakers, there will be more use of prepared mixes and ingredients than I usually include in my cooking classes. For example, we may use packaged frosting (instead of making it from scratch) or decorate shop bought cupcakes (rather than cooking these from scratch during the class).

Ingredient and kitchen equipment lists will be posted in the classroom around a week before each class. I will email learners who sign-up after this time as they will not be able to see the prior classroom posts, please allow 24 hours after signing-up for the ingredient and kitchen equipment email to reach you.

Parental Guidance
When you enrol in this class, you accept full responsibility for your learner's safety. It is essential that a responsible adult is in the same room as the learner (Outschool policy is that adults must remain off camera) and ready to step in to help if necessary. Learners will begin to chop ingredients and use knives for food preparation. Please be aware that sometimes sharper knives can be safer than blunt knives for chopping, as less force is necessary and they are less likely to slip or bounce off the food. Some recipes will require the use of a microwave to melt or heat ingredients. Adult supervision of knives, the microwave and hot ingredients is essential. Some recipes will need baking in the oven. An adult must be responsible for placing the food in the oven, checking on it during cooking and taking it out when necessary. The use of a stand mixer, or electric hand mixer, is helpful but optional during this class. If allowing your learner to use these, please supervise any electric mixing carefully, as younger learners are often not strong enough to operate these mixers on their own. Please ensure your learner has short sleeves, or close fitting long sleeves that will not get caught on equipment, long hair tied back and is wearing an apron or clothes that can be washed easily. Please ensure you check all your ingredients for possible allergens.
Supply List
Ingredient and kitchen equipment lists will be posted in the classroom around a week before each class. I will email learners who sign-up after this time as they will not be able to see the prior classroom posts, please allow 24 hours after signing-up for the ingredient and kitchen equipment email to reach you.

A recipe sheet will be shared the day before class. You may print this if you wish, or just follow along with the steps in class.

We will be cooking a variety of recipes and they will need a range of kitchen equipment, frequently used items include - oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, baking tins and trays, mixing bowls, measuring jugs, weighing scales or measuring cups, spoons, knives, piping bags, piping nozzles, scissors and baking parchment.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
