Class Experience

Welcome to Little Author's Writing Club! In this ongoing class, little authors will explore writing basics such as drawing detailed pictures, labeling, writing simple sentences, and sentence mechanics (when to use capital letters, what is a period, etc.). We will also troubleshoot writing difficulties, such as writer's block or having pictures that don't match the words, together as a group.

In this ongoing class, we will discuss various aspects of early writing. These sessions will serve as an introduction to various topics with the intention of exposing students to a variety of skills and providing practice time. Though sessions could be related (drawing detailed pictures is helpful when sharing a story with a friend), they do not build upon one another. Because writing involves many different skills, having a different focus each week gives students an opportunity to practice things they already know while incorporating new skills into their writing toolbox.

This class is best for students who have not yet started writing sentences but are interested in learning to write. Students do not need to be able to read or write words or even recognizable letters at this point. This is not a spelling or grammar class. Feel free to jump in at any time if spots are available, I will keep the schedule updated to reflect the focus topics and students do not need to have taken the previous week's class to benefit from the current week!

After we greet each other, class will begin with a mini-lesson. Little authors will then have time to apply the skill in their writing and I will check-in with each learner to provide coaching if necessary. At the end of class, we will have some time to share our work, our successes, and things that were difficult if students choose to do so!

Each week will have a focus but each class will be responsive to the needs of the group! If there is something learners want to work on, we will incorporate it into a later class or quickly address it if it is a quick question!

Week of March 29:
-Labeling pictures

Week of April 5:
-Sharing our stories with others

Previous Topics:
-Drawing detailed pictures
-Using pictures to tell a story

Learning Goals

Students will grow as authors by focusing on their illustrations and early sentence writing.

Supply List
I will send sample writing paper prior to class beginning. Though students can use a lined notebook, paper with a box for a picture and 2-4 lines underneath is ideal for this developmental age!

Students will also need:
-2 pencils with erasers (in case one breaks!)
-Crayons or colored pencils
-Folder to store work

Ideally, we stay away from pens because students sometimes get fixated if they make a mistake. Markers can be used but sometimes distract students from the writing. You know your little author best!

External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! Welcome to my classroom!

My name is Miss Jillian and I'm an educator with over half a decade of experience in elementary education. I have taught children of all ages but nothing makes me happier or more certain of my calling as an educator than teaching young learners. I've primarily spent time in classrooms Pre-K 3 through 1st but have tutored and taught students of all grades, K-12! I am certified in the state of Virginia to teach Elementary and Special Education.

I believe students learn best in small groups tailored to their specific needs. I think children are naturally curious and should be encouraged to explore their interests both in and outside the classroom. Good thing Outschool has a class for everyone!

I primarily focus on primary school classes, especially reading and writing. I love to foster a love of reading in my students! Nothing makes me happier than having a good book talk with a student! I also like to teach classes that allow students to steer the ship, like show and tell or reader's circle. I love when students share what they're passionate about with others!

My hobbies include baking and cooking, reading, writing, playing board games, and going for a walk with my dog. I collect fake cacti (knit, eraser, candles...I even have a lamp!) and Little Golden Books. I love all things Disney (especially Disney World...hoping to get to Disneyland soon!) and Harry Potter! I hope to share some of my passions with students through Outschool classes as well!

I can't wait to see you (or your child!) in my classroom soon! Please reach out with any questions, I am here to support my students in any way possible. Thanks for stopping by!
