40 mins in-class hoursHomework
There’s no specific homework, but artists may want to continue creating and experimenting with the supplies to make additional masterpieces!Assessment
Throughout the class, I will have artists share their work with me to see their progress and ask questions as they arise.Class Experience
Artists will meet me in the studio to compose a Valentine Pop-Art poster with markers, watercolors and more! We will start with brief introductions, a review of the supplies, and a brief history of the Pop-Art movement to understand the concepts and why it is unique. Our focus will be on drawing and basic painting skills, using simple lines, shapes and tints of color for our conversation hearts candy! We will set up our background in quadrants and use mixed media to create a two-tone color background with a border. On a separate paper, conversation hearts will be sketched, traced with marker, and watercolored, also in two different tones, to create a slight shadow effect. Once the hearts are cut, they can be layered on the background with alternating colors. While we are working, we will talk about composition, line, shape, and shadowing for the best results. These posters are fun and lively, playful masterpieces. Grab your supplies, and a sweet treat and meet me in the studio!
Learning Goals
My goal is for artists to have fun learning how to create colorful artwork using simple supplies they may already have and to continue to experiment on their own.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from UCLA
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA and have enjoyed working with vibrant colors through markers, paints, and chalk pastels. My personal style is more abstract, graphic, and even impressionistic and this is reflected in my own artwork over the years. I worked with young learners for several years when I was in charge of a volunteer- lead art program that focused on art elements and the art masters. We did many different types of projects and used different media and techniques each month. Sharing these colorful and simple ideas with young artists is exciting and I often learn from them as well as they share their ideas and express themselves in new ways.
