Class Experience

In this ongoing class, students will learn about a different famous artist every week. Each class will be broken down into a brief introduction about the artist's life and the style the artist is known for. After a demonstration, we will spend the remainder of class working on our own masterpieces inspired by the artist we learned about that day. Students are encouraged to continue working on their masterpieces outside of class time. Classes will incorporate art supplies commonly found in the home. Here is a breakdown of each week's class:

Class 1, September 3, 2021: Vincent Van Gogh-We will learn how to show movement in our art using Van Gogh's swirling style as inspiration.
Supplies needed: a piece of white paper and either crayons or colored pencils

Class 2, September 10, 2021: Katsushika Hokusai-We will be making surimono (greeting cards) incorporating scenes from nature in ink and watercolor.
Supplies needed: piece of construction paper folded in half (horizontally), white piece of paper cut in half (this will be glued to the front of our card), a glue stick, a black pen, a pencil, and water color paints and a cup of water. If you do not have construction paper OR glue, your child can make a card using just the white paper.

September 17, 2021: Frida Kahlo- We will be drawing our own self-portraits and learning to look at detail within our own faces.
Supplies needed: white drawing paper, pencil and eraser, coloring tools of choice (crayons, pencils, paint, etc.), and a mirror

September 24, 2021: Georges Seurat- We will be learning about a style of painting called pointillism by using dots to create a colorful picture.
Supplies needed: tempura paints (red, yellow blue, white, and black), white drawing paper, and cotton swabs. Tempura paint is recommended because it will allow students to more easily invent new colors, HOWEVER, this project can be adapted for crayon if you do not have tempura paint on hand.
