Class Experience
Identify and locate the continent and country. Talk about key features and characteristics of a continent and country. To gain a hands on understanding of the world around us through STEAM projects.
Week beginning June 6th - Africa / Ethiopia / How can we measure temperature? -Rubbing Alcohol -Food colouring -A clear bottle -Straw (clear or faintly coloured - the food colouring should be visible through the straw) -Permanent marker Week beginning June 13th - Europe / Iceland / How can we make our own volcano? -1 lemon cut in half (a lime or orange would also work) - the bottom should also be cut off to ensure the lemon stands up -Food colouring -Baking soda / powder and spoon -Dish Soap -Tray or plate -Fork Week beginning June 20th - North America / Canada / How do polar bears stay warm? -2 ziplock bags (large enough for one of your learner's hands) -A large bowl filled with ice and water -Shortening - such as butter, margarine or lard Week beginning June 27th - South America / Brazil / Why does it rain? -Clear glass / jar -Shaving foam - Blue food colouring (or any other colour) -Dropper / pipette -Water Week beginning July 4th - Asia / Turkey / How do hot air balloons fly? -Empty bottle - Balloon - Hot water Week beginning July 11th - North America / Mexico / Can we build a pyramid? -Marshmallows / gum drops - Toothpicks Week beginning July 18th - Oceania / Australia / How do sharks float? -2 small bottles -Oil -A large tub/bowl of water (large enough for the bottle to float /sink) Week beginning July 25th - Europe / Finland / Do objects float better in saltwater or freshwater? -2 tall glasses (large enough to fit an egg) -2 fresh eggs (they should sink in water) -Water -Salt and spoon Week beginning August 1st - Africa / Egypt / Can we build a raft for the River Nile? - This is based on what your learners want to use - they can gather resources themselves to build the raft in class -Ideas - corks / sticks / bottles / straws Week beginning August 8th - South America / Argentina / How can we melt ice? - Cupcake tray / muffin tray with ice cubes -Salt - things that can be used to melt ice - learners can try and brainstorm some ideas before the activity - Idea - brushes / water Week beginning August 15th - Asia / China / Can you build a strong bridge? - Books / cups - Paper - Coins or other small objects Week beginning August 22nd - Europe / Iceland / How can we make our own volcano? -1 lemon cut in half (a lime or orange would also work) - the bottom should also be cut off to ensure the lemon stands up -Food colouring -Baking soda / powder and spoon -Dish Soap -Tray or plate -Fork Week beginning August 29th - South America / Brazil / Why does it rain? -Clear glass / jar -Shaving foam - Blue food colouring (or any other colour) -Dropper / pipette -Water
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parents should prepare materials for the class in advance and a safe space for learners to complete the projects (in case of any spillages) Please supervise your learners during the activity.
