Description
Class Experience
*This class is for 8th -10th grade. Due to the content and difficulty of readings, please message me if you want to enroll if you are younger than the age range listed. I realize some students are above their grade range for their age, which is also fine, but please read full description. **This is the second Literature class in my list of my Literature classes but can be taken at anytime. To continue Literature with me, you can take 101 and 103. They go up in difficulty and grade as they...
I have taught Literature and English for 6 years. I have a certification in English and have a Master's in teaching. I love sharing my love for literature with students and love challenging them to read things out of their comfort zone. I encourage solid discussion and like to push them and challenge them. I have taught all of these before in the classroom and in my charter school.
Students will have weekly assignments to do including the reading of their given novel, play, or story.
I will be using PDF files of the play, story and poem but students will need to get the novel. This can be bought or rented. Novel needed is "The Glass Castle" Author: Jeannette Walls Here is the amazon link to the correct version. https://www.amazon.com/Glass-Castle-Memoir-Jeannette-Walls/dp/074324754X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1K1CGWQ5YQ8V7&keywords=the+glass+castle+by+jeannette+walls&qid=1643152563&sprefix=the+glass+castle%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-1
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
*The Glass Castle - This is a true story memoir by Jeannette Walls where she recounts her deeply dysfunctional yet vibrant upbringing, emphasizing her resilience and her father's attempts toward redemption. (My mom grew up in the place that she ends up in West Virginia so I share my personal relation to the story). **Warning: This story is tough in places because mentions of poverty, abuse, and a few other tough topics to discuss come up. We will not dive super deep into these on personal levels, but they will be discussed in relation to the story. *The Odyssey - The epic story of Odysseus' 10-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War while he battles mystical creatures and faces the wrath of the gods. **Warning - There is discussion of sex in the text but we will NOT be discussion it in class. Just know it mentions it in the play. We will discuss some topics on poverty and other tough situations and how to handle them in The Glass Castle. This is a middle school read in all schools today and I am well prepared to discuss it with discretion. The Odyssey will be discussing Greek Mythology which might have talk of sirens and gods.
I will be using PDF files of the play, story and poem but students will need to get the novel. This can be bought or rented.
