The book "Look Both Ways" by Jason Reynolds
Chapters in the book includes topics such as children dealing with parents having cancer and themes of bullying. In all cases, the themes are handled in a developmentally appropriate way that help this age group understand real-life issues. Children who read this book feel respected for being allowed to consider topics of which they are already aware. With support from the teacher, these topics help the children understand real-world issues without being expected to understand them as adults.
I've been a certified teacher in Washington State since 1990, holding a Continuing Teacher Education Certificate with K-12 Special Ed, K-8 Elementary Ed, P-3 Early Childhood Special Ed, and P-3 Early Childhood Ed endorsements. In those 30+...
