Class Experience

Join us as we read Sarah, Plain and Tall. Each week we will be talking about the assigned chapter and doing an activity that relates to the chapter. We will cover writing, reading, comprehension questions, vocabulary, science, art, and history during this 10 week class. Each week will focus on a different chapter of the book.

Sarah, Plain and Tall has a Guided Reading Level of R, a lexile level of 660L, and a DRA Level of 60. This book is about a 3rd-4th grade level. The activities designed were created for 3rd-4th grade student level.

Week 1: Welcome, Introductions, and Background Information
During week 1, we will meet each other. We will discuss life on the prairie, the time period the book takes place, play a game, and make a craft. This introduction week will set the stage for our book.

Week 2: Chapter 1
During week 2, we will discuss chapter 1. We will do a map project on google maps and talk about the sea. This session will talk about the setting of the book.

Week 3: Chapter 2
During week 3, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 2. We will learn how to write a friendly letter.

Week 4: Chapter 3
During week 4, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 3. We will learn about the Transcontinental Railway.

Week 5: Chapter 4
During week 5, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 4. We will learn about seeds and make a mini greenhouse.

Week 6: Chapter 5
During week 6, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 5. We will learn how to draw a sheep.

Week 7: Chapter 6
During week 7, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 6. We will be making fake snow and deciding which recipe feels like real snow.

Week 8:Chapter 7
During week 8, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 7. We will learn about eggs and do a floating egg experiment.

Week 9: Chapter 8
During week 9, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 8. We will learn about tornadoes and do an experiment.

Week 10: Chapter 9
During week 10, we will discuss the comprehension questions from chapter 9. We will do an experiment on ocean waves.

Each week students will have reading homework and comprehension questions to answer.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Sarah, Plain and Tall starts out with the mother dying from childbirth. It is mentioned a few times through the book. Parents will need to be aware.

Students will need to purchase the book, Sarah, Plain, and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan.

Week 1: paper, pencil, mason jar, 5 clothespins, string, large button with holes or a piece of cardboard cut in a circle the same size

Week 2: seashell to share, book, and comprehension questions

Week 3: paper, pencil, book, and comprehension questions

Week 4: paper, pencil, book, and comprehension questions

Week 5: an empty plastic water bottle, soil, scissors, tape, flower seeds, book and comprehension questions. Stickers to decorate your greenhouse (optional).

Week 6: blank paper, pencil, colored pencils, book, and comprehension questions

Week 7: paper towels, baking soda, vinegar, water, 2 bowls, 2 spoons, book, and comprehension questions

Week 8: 2 glasses of water, 2 eggs, spoon, Tablespoon to measure, salt, paper towels, book, and comprehension questions

Week 9: 2 plastic bottles the same size, a washer, blue food coloring, duct tape, water, book, and comprehension questions

Week 10: mason jar or plastic water bottle, vegetable oil or baby oil to fill up ½ of the bottle, water to fill ½ of the bottle, blue food coloring, sand, shells from the ocean, book, and comprehension questions.

Reminders of what to bring each week will be listed in the classroom.
