Class Experience

Why is a pen called a pen? Who makes up words? Who decides if they belong in a dictionary? And most importantly, can people like you and me INVENT new words? Fifth-grader Nick Allen wants to know the answers to these questions...and he comes up with a brilliant (but controversial) way to find out!

In this course, learners will engage in a literature circle format. After reading assigned chapters, they will take responsibility for leading various aspects of the discussion. Roles include artful artist (responding to the text with art), literary luminary (identifying significant passages in the story), word wizard (exploring vocabulary), discussion director (asking questions for the group to consider together), and colorful connector (finding ways the text can be connected to other pieces of literature or to real life).

Depending on group size, we will meet as one large group or two smaller groups. I will act as facilitator throughout, helping learners to lead their portion of the discussion thoughtfully and effectively.

Outside of class, learners will need to read or listen to the assigned chapters of Frindle and prepare for their role in the group discussion using materials they will be able to download as pdf files.

At the end of class, students will receive individualized feedback about their contributions to the group.

Overview of reading:
For week 1 (to be completed prior to the first class discussion): chapters 1-4
For week 2: chapters 5-7
For week 3: chapters 8-10
For week 4: chapters 11-13
For week 5: chapters 14-15

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Nicole, and I've had the joy of working with children for 24 years in a variety of capacities. I worked as a special educator and then a classroom teacher for ten years before becoming a full-time homeschooling mom, which I have been doing for the last fourteen years. I have four school-age children, all of whom learn at home. I also teach classes out of my home for local homeschooling children. My newest venture, ucurriculum.com, is where you can find all the online classes that I currently offer.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy working in several fulfilling capacities. I am the founder of unschoolers.org, where I blog about the educational philosophy known as unschooling and share stories of my family's journey from traditional education to practicing unschooling. I am also the author of several children's books as well as one book for adults that chronicles my parenting journey. I have had the pleasure of being interviewed for several podcasts and websites, including a parenting podcast called We Turned Out Okay. I've been honored to speak to various groups about parenting and educational philosophy including New Hampshire's Head Start State Parent Advisory Council. I am also an educational consultant, helping parents to make educational choices that are best for their children and supporting them as they make educational transitions.

I truly believe that children learn best when they are interested in what they are learning and are offered a wide range of options for acquiring a skill. My goal is to present ideas in a way that is fun, engaging, and respectful of children's individual learning processes. I see myself as a partner and facilitator, joyfully exploring concepts along with my learners. Therefore, I teach only what I am passionate about, hopeful that this will kindle an enthusiasm for the subject matter in my learners.
