Most people have fond memories of the time when a teacher read a story aloud to them at school, and for me, E.B. White's story, The Trumpet of the Swan, will be a read aloud I always fondly remember. In this Outschool class, students will enjoy a time to listen to the story while drawing or coloring. Students will also have the opportunity to retell portions of the story, discuss the characters and analyze the story elements. After class, students will independently finish an assigned portion of the text while making note of their favorite parts to be prepared for discussing the assigned reading at the beginning of the next class. Students can also complete other activities related to the text that will result in a completed portfolio of work by the end of the course.
Learning Goals
Students will retell portions of a story.
Students will participate in discussions about the literary work and analyze characters, motives, and the author's purpose in the text.
Students will predict what will happen in a story.
Students will role play scenes from a story to demonstrate comprehension.
Students will complete vocabulary activities.
