Class Experience

Let's think critically about the comic strips you know and love!
.

Before I learned to read, I loved to ask family members to read the Sunday morning comics page to me. These readings usually included some of my favorite strips. Once I learned to read independently, I sought out the comics page for a laugh. Sometime in my teens, I had a couple of "Ah ha!" moments while reading the Sunday comics in the newspaper. As an adult, I appreciate many comics for their commentary on life. Do you also appreciate comic strips? In this class, we will learn how to discuss your favorite comics using questions that are commonly considered when evaluating literature.

In this three week class, students will research, discuss, and think. They will have the opportunity to organize and deliver short oral presentations. Each week, students will be expected to bring to class a comic strip that is relevant to a topic:

Week 1 - Your favorite comic of all time. We will also discuss class expectations and the 3 types of questions that I ask in class. In class, learners will be assigned the homework of finding a comic strip for the next week's topic: Life lessons.

Week 2 - Life Lessons. In class, learners will be assigned the homework of finding a comic strip for the next week's topic: self-reflection

Week 3 - Self reflection.

** Please note: this is a discussion class. It is important that learners come to class prepared to share comic strips and discuss ideas. It is appropriate for learners to bring several examples relevant to the class topic especially when we have a smaller class.

Learners will find details for each new topic in the classroom. They should come to each class prepared with that week's assignment and paper and pencil that they can use to write down their thoughts and questions during presentations to aid in thoughtful discussion.

Let's laugh and learn together!
