It’s been over 170 years since the death of famed author Edgar Allen Poe, but his writings continue to influence films and literature today. Like the fairy tales of our childhood, his short stories provide morals for society—morals cloaked in murder and mystery. In this one-off class we will read one of Poe’s short stories, discuss the story, and write our own short fictional piece. Students will read The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. They will be able to access the story the day...

I love reading but as technology increases it's easy to forget the joy that a good book can provide. Growing up with a passion for old literature (probably the only 8th Grader in my school reading Agatha Christie novels for fun) I still find it hard to connect with many of today's fictional best sellers. As a professional actress and dancer, it is common for artist to revisit old works looking for new meanings. I have always felt that anyone who hates either dance or reading simply hasn't found the right fit yet. There are tons of different types of non-fiction books and I look forward to exploring this author with you.
Students will be asked to submit their own short story in the style of the short story read. Short stories will be due within 5 days of completing the class and will be submitted using Google Drive.
- Laptop, tablet, or computer to take the class - A quiet work space - Ability to access Google Drive (we will be using Google Docs for our writing assignments). - The reading material will be emailed using a pdf or web url. You will not be required to buy any books or print anything. - Writing will be done on the students electronic device, but pencil and paper are welcome if that is apart of your child's creative process.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students under age 11 are welcome to attend but please contact me before registering. The subject matter of the short stories are dark in theme (murder, deceit) and it is understood that participants are mature enough to read this type of fiction. This class uses Nearpod.
