Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner - Advanced Level
Reading doesn’t just consist of reading the words on the page. Comprehension doesn’t just magically happen. In fact, experts have come to agree that for real comprehension to take place, readers use one or more strategies to aid in their comprehension of a text. These strategies include: Making Connections, Visualizing, Asking Questions, Predicting, Determining Importance, Inferring, and Synthesizing.

As seasoned readers, adults use these reading strategies without much effort, but young readers need to be explicitly taught what these strategies are and how to use them. Overtime, readers will learn to weave in and out these strategies to fully comprehend the texts that they are reading.

Learners are invited to join the fun as we explore reading comprehension strategies. Using a multimedia interactive learning guide, learners will use videos, short stories, and interactive activities to learn about a different reading comprehension strategy each lesson.

Each lesson will use a LINKtivity® Interactive Learning Guide to explain the given strategy, show examples, and give an opportunity for learners to demonstrate their understanding of that reading comprehension strategy. To help solidify understanding and retention, learners will fill out the student activity pages while going through the LINKtivity® in each lesson. After learning about all the different strategies, learners will create a final project to demonstrate their understanding.

Since this is a class about reading comprehension strategies, students are encouraged to pick out a chapter book of their choice to be reading as they go through this class. (If they are reading a book for another class, they are welcome to use it. They don’t need to pick a new one just for this class.) After each lesson, they will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of the strategy in that lesson using the book they are reading.

*LINKtivity® Interactive Learning Guide is a fun and interactive multimedia learning guide that will keep learners engaged and motivated with kid-friendly videos, audio clips, graphics, photographs, and more that put them in control of their learning process. Each LINKtivity® has audio support to read the text to students so they can focus on learning. There are also interactive activities built in so students can monitor their own understanding. No account is required to access the LINKtivity®. The LINKtivity® DOES NOT ask for any information from the student.

*Note: This is a SELF-PACED class. There will be NO live meetings. We will do everything using videos, pictures, and posts in the classroom.

*REFUND POLICY: Once the material has been sent to the learner, there will be NO refunds issued.
