Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 12
This class with provide 1-on-1 tutoring for all aspects of English Language Arts instruction for middle and high school students. Sessions will be tailored to each learner's needs, but possible topics that could be covered include, but are not limited to: reading comprehension, literary analysis, analytical and creative writing, grammar and conventions of standard English.

Skills and Content that I could assist with for each topic include:

Reading Comprehension: activating prior knowledge, vocabulary, making inferences, making connections, asking questions, annotation/note taking

Literary Analysis: plot, character analysis, point of view, figurative language/literary devices, style, tone

Writing: parts of an essay, writing a thesis statement, providing textual evidence (quotations), proper citation, sentence structure, paragraph structure, figurative language/literary devices, tone, style, word choice, grammar

The structure of the class would be as follows:

Check-in/Icebreaker: 5 mins
Review instructions for the assignment and/or rubric to ensure learner understands expectations: 5-10 minutes
Support learner in completing the assignment: 30-40 minutes
Check-out/Review: Support learner in synthesizing what they learned and how they can apply it to future assignments: 5-10 minutes

I have a very structured, but student-centered teaching style. I ask learners lots of questions to help them figure out what they already know and invite them to ask me lots of questions as well. If direct instruction is required, I try to limit that portion of the class to 10-15 minutes. I give learners many opportunities to practice, and I try to incorporate games such as Kahoot when appropriate. I also like to use video clips when appropriate. I strive to make my classes interactive to keep students engaged.
