Course Overview:
This course is designed to enhance students' reading comprehension skills, focusing on the identification of topics, main ideas, and supporting details within informational texts. By the end of the course, students will efficiently extract key information from texts as they  improve their analytical thinking and academic performance.

--Learn Techniques for Effective Note-Taking (an Executive Function Skill - Organization) 
--Define and Identify ‘Topics’ and ‘Topic Sentences’ 
--Uncover Main Ideas and the Support Details
--Apply Skills to Informational (Nonfiction) Texts

Class Structure:
Each section of our course zeroes in on a different facet of reading comprehension, starting with an overview of standards and objectives. Lessons unfold through stages: Note-taking skills, Connection Building, Focused Lesson (with definitions and analysis demonstration), Guided Practice (passage analysis), Independent Practice (writing activity), and an Exit Ticket (brief assessment). Instructional videos, interactive quizzes, and hands-on exercises enrich the learning experience, culminating in a writing project where students analyze their informational writing.

Teaching Approach:
Our learner-centered approach mixes direct instruction with interactive learning, using animated videos and hands-on activities to spark curiosity and foster a love for learning.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
During the course, students will engage with a Google Slides presentation and participate in Nearpod activities without needing to fully log into these external tools. On Nearpod, initials can be used instead of full names for privacy. However, if students opt to use Google Docs for note-taking, they will need to log into their Google account to take notes and complete the writing task.
Supply List
For students who prefer traditional note-taking, please have a notebook and a pen or pencil ready during the lesson.  Otherwise, they may use Google Docs during notetaking segments.
