Students will be able to identify the elements of music at the end of eight weeks. Students will also be familiar with the iconic pieces of music listed under "Class Experience." Students will experience music learning in a dynamic setting and will be exposed to musical sounds, background information, elements of music, and music analysis to form a knowledge base and to develop their critical thinking and formation of opinions. Exposure to enduring, iconic pieces of music is crucial to all learners in order to develop a knowledge base. Learners will express opinions about what they hear. This is also crucial to future music analysis and formation of preferences and development of critical thinking in music. Students who have a broad knowledge base have more information to use when accessing higher-order functions of the brain. This class is a crucial piece of the big picture in terms of basic knowledge, history, and learning in first grade. This class fulfills the listening and music appreciation component of a first grader's music learning experience.

Students can practice the elements of music learned, the music heard, and listen to the homework assignment, “Sleeping Beauty,” by reviewing the class slides. Learners can access the class slides by clicking on the link in the Outschool classroom.
Learners will need to print the coloring page each week before class. If desired, other coloring pages on the weekly subject material may be added or substituted for those provided by the teacher. For practice, learners will need to access the class materials linked on our Outschool classroom page.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner progress will be assessed and teaching adjusted for the learners in each live class meeting. Parents will receive a message with feedback and suggestions for practice each week after the live class. If a learner is absent for one of the live classes, the parent can help them to watch the class video and send a message to the teacher with the student’s answers to the questions asked in class. This will constitute a successful make-up class, and this option can only be used once during an 8-week course. Each learner will receive a certificate of completion via Outschool message when the course has been fully completed.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
