Class experience
Yes, algebra is for elementary-age kids when using powerful picture-based problems and innovative methods! During this 4-week club your child will be solving algebraic equations in picture, numerical, and word problem format using the Hands-On Equations Learning System and Beast Academy Online. This club offers new algebraic equation challenges that will keep learners on their toes, but is also fun, intuitive, and a physical approach to learning. Any child who can do basic addition,...
In this club, we will explore pattern-based thinking, important math vocabulary, integers (including negative numbers), operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as well as order of operations, and, yes, solve "real" algebra equations with variables. Besides solving multi-step algebraic equations in number, picture, and word problem format, your child will learn how to: - Define important algebraic vocabulary. - Analyze verbal problems and determine best strategies for solving the problem. - Apply substitution and mental math to check solutions to algebraic equations. - Use mathematical models to represent and solve problems with rational numbers. - Write algebraic equations with variables from verbal problems. - Provide the answer to problems in picture, number, and verbal formats. - Use multiple strategies to solve real-world problems.
I am a certified PK-6 Virginia teacher with additional certifications and specialization in Gifted and Talented Advanced Academics and the inquiry-based International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). I have over 15 years of experience teaching for schools, homeschool groups, and families around the world. I believe all children have an inherent love for learning, and, because I love math and believe math literacy is an essential skill that all children can learn to the highest levels, I have specialized in math and STEAM-related education.
No materials are required, but your child my want to have the following on hand if they like to actively do the work along with us: 1. Paper and pencil (or a whiteboard and a marker) 2. 6-8 small objects of the same color and size (e.g. pawns from a chess game, unifix cubes, or mini-marshmallows... if they won't eat them!) 3. Dice: 2 regular dice and 2 10-sided dice (Alternatively, tiles with the numbers 1-10 or simply small squares of paper each labeled with one number from 1-10 would also suffice.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
