1 hour per week. Students will be required to review basic concepts in order to participate in class discussions. They will also need to write several limericks to demonstrate understanding.Assessment
Students will receive a final report based on their ability to write a successful limerick and their class participation.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 5
In this class, students will learn the basics of poetry (rhyme scheme, rhythm, stanza, etc.) and then learn to write their own limerick. The class will be a combination of group learning for concepts, practice and introductions. Then, students will work both individually and in small breakout groups on their own poems. I teach by teaching basic concepts, introducing students to examples, and then having them apply their knowledge to confirm understanding. I would use lecture, reading, discussion and practice to teach the concepts. Day 1 would introduce students to the necessary poetry concepts. Day 2 would continue student understanding of basic poetry concepts and begin the process of writing . Day 3 students would edit other students poems for structure and fun. Students don't need any prior knowledge of poetry and limericks to participate. However, if they are already very familiar with poetry, this class would be too basic for them.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what rhyme scheme, stanzas, and rhythm are to poetry. They will also learn the rules to limericks and successfully write their own limerick.
