Class Experience

Welcome to the Light Sabers and Jedi class! I am so excited to bring this fun social class to your learners! Here we will explore the shapes, sizes, and colors of lightsabers. Learners will be engaged in choosing their own lightsaber to draw by looking at pictures of other lightsabers. I am an educator and mother of 6 children, 5 of those are boys! I am energetic and passionate about teaching, sharing, talking, and having fun together in the classroom! I love to incorporate movement, interesting conversation, and energy into my classroom!

The 45-minute class will be structured with a 5-minute circle time/introduction, 15 minutes of instruction (learners will engage with a PowerPoint and see images of lightsaber shapes, colors, sizes), 15 minutes of group conversation (show and tell), and 15 minutes of individual creation or a classroom challenge. Students may also participate in games about lightsabers and increase their speaking time.

In the first week, learners will be invited to bring any toys they have and we'll enjoy talking, comparing, and sharing about our favorite characteristics of the Jedi people and storylines. In the second week, we will draw and create our own lightsabers and share them with the class! The students will be able to have speaking and listening time. They should also bring paper, pencils, crayons or art supplies.

No previous experience needed. Learners should know what a Jedi is and what a lightsaber is before joining the class.

We cannot dive into specific movies in the classroom via video, images, or music due to copyright laws. Learners may share their opinions and stories that they love. Learners should not be nervous or feel like they cannot share appropriate opinions or materials in this class regarding the topic. Let's have fun and share what we love!

Learning Goals

Learners will learn about Light Saber handles and blade colors. Learners will decide and create their own lightsaber from options. Learners will draw their own lightsabers after deciding which options they would like and why and then they will share their thoughts and opinions about which Jedi use different colors and why. Learners will focus on drawing shapes and lines as well as fading, outlining, and pencil strokes when coloring.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Lightsabers are weapons, we will not talk about using them as weapons on people, animals, or gory topics. We will talk about them from the personal perspective of each Jedi. We will focus on conversations that aim at the reflection of characters and "good" vs "evil".
Supply List
Please bring any star wars toys you have, lightsabers you have, or any relia from the movies!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Teacher Vanessa and I've worked with kids for 14+ years inside and outside the classroom with art, reading, character development, and parties!

In Outschool, you'll find that my classes are focused on
1) Holiday Enrichment (art) classes (hello online class parties!) where we learn interesting facts, play games, draw/color, have fun, and learn about each other;
2) English, Science, and Math classes for Pre-K through 2nd grade that focus on hands-on learning (food and fractions, reading and comprehension, etc.). I have been inside the classroom helping 1-2nd graders for years and it's the best age in my book! They are sweet, love to share everything about their lives, and get so excited about learning!
3.) I also teach engaging Social classes (galaxy geeks), Personality classes, and Career Exploration. I honestly love to chat and I think that students should always feel safe and heard in their classes. I love teaching about Career Exploration because honestly, our education system has failed us in this regard! Learners are often figuring these topics out in college with very expensive semesters of discovery. Let's learn what we can now, while in middle and high schools BEFORE we decide which major or job field we want to join! I really love my personality series because it's fun to be introspective and focus on self-improvement. I hope to see your older 10+ age learners there!

My Bachelor's degree is from Brigham Young University-Idaho in Psychology with a minor in Children Studies and Language. I went into Psychology because honestly, I love people. I love to listen, talk and understand others.

My teaching philosophy is always aimed at getting the kids to have a great time while learning, so they don't even realize they're learning! I like to have kids be accountable as well in the classroom. Having students work on a worksheet, and then take time to share, explain and show their work is really important to me during class. If we ever run out of time, I prefer to see students share their work privately so they can get feedback and continue learning and growing.
I have a lot of energy while teaching because honestly, online learning has to be engaging. I love to play soccer and ski with my family! I can't wait to see you in the classroom!

I have six children and I live in the great state of Idaho!
