"Life Science Lab Series: Hands-On Biology" is an ideal way for students to spend part of their summer break, enriching their understanding of the natural world through engaging and educational scientific experiments. Each session begins with a brief overview of the day’s lab, including an explanation of the scientific principle and the hypothesis to be tested. This is followed by the hands-on experiment, during which students work with their teacher and classmates to perform the lab and collect data. At the end of each session, students engage in a group discussion to analyze their results and draw conclusions, fostering a deeper understanding of the biological concept explored. Week 1: Cellular Biology and Chemistry Session 1: Using Iodine to Measure Starch Presence Objective: Learn how to detect the presence of starch in various food items using iodine. Concepts Covered: Chemical indicators, starch composition in plants. Session 2: Properties of Water Objective: Explore the unique properties of water, such as cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension, through various small experiments. Concepts Covered: Molecular polarity, hydrogen bonding, water's role in life. Week 2: Plant Biology and Cellular Processes Session 3: Cell Membrane Diffusion Objective: Investigate how substances move across cell membranes through a simple diffusion experiment using dialysis tubing. Concepts Covered: Diffusion, semi-permeable membranes, passive transport. Session 4: Plant Transpiration Objective: Measure the rate of transpiration in plants under different environmental conditions. Concepts Covered: Plant physiology, water cycle, factors affecting transpiration. Week 3: Genetics and Plant Reproduction Session 5: Observing Onion Roots Objective: Examine onion root cells under a microscope to identify cells in different stages of mitosis. Concepts Covered: Cell cycle, mitosis, cellular reproduction. Session 6: Diagramming DNA with Candy Objective: Construct a model of DNA using candy to understand its structure and function. Concepts Covered: DNA structure, base pairing, genetic coding.
Learning Goals
Acquire practical skills in conducting basic life science experiments.
Develop an understanding of key biological concepts and processes.

Hi learners and parents!
I currently am a credentialed teacher in Washington State and hold my endorsements in biology (5-12), health (K-12) and fitness (K-12).
I currently teach AP Biology, honors biology, anatomy and physiology and health science.
Last year, I taught biology, environmental science, health, physics and P.E. to middle and high school students.
I hold my Masters Degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in life sciences and health.
I received my Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training from Whitworth University. I completed 1,250 clinical hours working with medical doctors, physicians assistants and physical therapists in physical therapy clinics, collegiate, semi-professional and high school athletic training rooms, emergency rooms and urgent cares.
