Life Is Better With Algebra: Pythagorean Theorem, Distance Formula, Statistics
What's included
6 live meetings
4 in-class hoursAssessment
Feedback will be provided while students are completing examples in class with me. Parents are also welcome to contact me via Outschool messages with any specific questions about performance.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
I am happy to provide this 6-meeting multi-day class (one of three I'm offering) to help students build their algebraic foundation in a fun, engaging way! Instruction will be delivered via power point demonstrations, which will include instruction/notes and games/activities to further motivate and support learners! I will be able to assess progress through our live interaction in class. Students will be encouraged to participate during the lesson either using their microphones, chat box or via the Outschool classroom (questions before or after class). This will allow me the opportunity to provide feedback and any additional supports that may be needed. Class sizes will also be kept small (no more than 8 learners) in order to provide a more personalized experience. Using a standard Algebra textbook, along with numerous resources I have used in my 25 years of teaching, I will provide lessons on the following topics: Class 1: Pythagorean Theorem (finding the missing length of the hypotenuse of the triangles) Class 2: Pythagorean Theorem (finding the missing lengths of the legs of the triangles) Class 3: Introduction to Trig Ratios Class 4: Using the Midpoint and Distance Formulas for a set of ordered pairs on a graph Class 5: Statistics (Five Number Summary, Box Plots) Class 6: Simple Probabilities This course would be ideal for students who have taken a Pre-Algebra course or have a basic knowledge of whole number and integer operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) as well as solving equations. This class would also be appropriate for students currently taking Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 who may have gaps in their learning and need the review of skills in order to strengthen their knowledge base and close those gaps. *If students are not able to commit to these live sessions, I do have a 12-week FLEX version for this course, covering the same material (Hitting the Highlights- Algebra) that covers these topics and more!
Learning Goals
In this third part of the course, students will:
-use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing side of right triangles
-use a formula to find the distance between points on a coordinate plane
-using trig ratios to find the missing measures of a right triangle
-create and analyze box plots
-calculate simple probabilities

Supply List
Students should have a three-ring binder in order to keep track of assignments and notes from each session. A calculator and graph paper would be nice items to have, however, when possible, I will suggest websites that may have the tools that a learner may need (example: online calculators).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from University of Maryland, Baltimore County
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics as well as a Master's Degree in Education. With 20 years of experience teaching in the classroom coupled with 5 years of experience teaching online to students with varying abilities and needs, I feel extremely qualified to deliver this instruction to learners via Outschool. I love Algebra and how it sharpens the mind. I want students to enjoy mathematics on every level and my approach to this class has the ability to turn students into lifelong lovers of the subject!
