In this ongoing class, learners who identify as LGBTQIA+ will get to meet in a safe space with peers and I to discuss topics involving the community. Topics will be chosen weekly by the students, but I will also have some current news topics on hand in case none are volunteered by the learners to prompt conversation. This class will be student-centered, with myself acting as both moderator and mentor of the discussion as necessary. Learners will not need to share anything about their...
Learners will become more confident sharing their thoughts and ideas with peers. They will develop a community and become more aware of current events and LGBTQIA+ culture and history.
While this class will not be focused on teaching about LGBTQIA+ history, it is very likely that conversation will involve it in some capacity. I have been an active member of the queer community for many years and minored in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies in college. This training included courses covering theory, history, activism, etc. I was the tutor for this subject in my college's Academic Center, and have experience both teaching and tutoring this topic to both members and non-members of the community. I have experience as a mentor for LGBTQIA+ youth, and am familiar with discussing these topics in an age-appropriate and understandable way.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Due to the nature of LGBTQIA+ history and current events, some topics may be sensitive or difficult for students. Appropriate trigger warnings will be given, and students are welcome to choose a different topic to discuss or step away from the class for a period of time if they are uncomfortable with what is being discussed. Students will be asked about their comfort level in regard to different topics, and are welcome to share their response in any way they feel comfortable either in the group or with me directly.
