Class Experience

**Update May 4th, 2024** We are currently playing a modded world that is space and tech themed.

In addition to having a purchased copy of Minecraft: Java Edition, learners will also need Curseforge.

This ongoing Minecraft Java class is mainly for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, gender-nonbinary, pansexual, and any other student under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. I will bring a challenge for students to work together and complete each week. As students participate, we will have casual conversation to talk about gameplay and life. I will let the conversation flow freely as long as it remains class-appropriate.

We are playing in survival mode for May, June, and July of 2024.

Technical Requirements
-student needs a purchased copy of Minecraft: Java Edition
-student needs to download the Curseforge program

Student Ability
-able to read and type
*Sometimes we will have to write short lines of in-game code to program command blocks to do certain functions*

My teaching style is conversational. I like for students to feel free to ask each other questions and to ask me questions. I try to teach my classes from the most intersectional perspective possible, keeping in mind Black, Indigenous, and other people of colors, social classes, ability, sexuality, gender identity, etc.
Learning Goals
-Students will develop interpersonal skills.
-Students will use critical thinking to solve problems within Minecraft.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Swearing: Some learners may use swear words when talking. Racism, Religion, and Politics: Some learners may mention these topics as they intersect with their identity as an LGBTQIA+ person. If this topic comes up, it will always be framed in the context of how the student presents it as long as it does not go against the existence of other marginalized members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Discrimination and Hate Crimes: Some learners may mention these topics when talking about about their experience or another LGBTQIA+ person. Mental Health: Some students may mention suicide, depression, and other mental health matters while talking freely in class about their experience as an LGBTQIA+ person. If students share that they are having mental health concerns personally, I will encourage them to seek out an adult in their personal life that they can trust since I am not a certified counselor and I will message their parent and Outschool Safety. Sex Work- Some students might mention sex work when discussing some famous or influential LGBTQIA+ individuals. When discussions of sex work come up, I will treat it as a job that some people had to do to survive while also recognizing that some people choose this career. Forge- this is one of the programs that allows people to play modded versions of Minecraft. There is a unique version of Forge for each version of Minecraft. For example, if a mod is made for Minecraft version 1.12.2, then a person will need Forge version 1.12.2. (Likewise if a mod is meant for Minecraft version 1.7.10, then a person will need Forge version 1.7.10.) If you download Forge 1.12.2 then CurseForge is not needed. CurseForge- this program is a pre-launcher. You tell this program which mod you want to play or which Forge you want to play, and it downloads the necessary files to launch the correct version of Forge for you. This program also provides easy access to mod files for users.
Supply List
Learners will need:
- a purchased copy of Minecraft: Java Edition for PC or Mac
-CurseForge (this will allow for playing mods)
-the installation of the mods used on the server (a guide will be given after enrollment)

Here is more information about Forge and CurseForge.
