Description

Class Experience

Students will leave this class with a better understanding of common gender and sexual identity terms as well as an understanding of the differences between gender identity, gender expression, attraction, and sex. Students will observe respectful conversation and critical media analysis modeled and gain a sense that their questions are valid and deserve thoughtful, research-based answers.
I am a certified teacher with experience teaching sex education/health, biology, and special education with almost a decade leading a Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) with high school student. In short, I spent years regularly facilitating conversations about gender and sexuality with teenagers. I taught health and sex ed class, as well as integrated gender affirming and inclusive language into my biology courses. I have experience initiating conversations with adult colleagues and creating space for parents to talk about gender and sexuality as part of supporting the gender and sexuality minority students in my community as well as close personal ties to the trans/nonbinary community.

We will talk openly and honestly about gender and sexuality terminology and provide space for students to ask anonymous questions that will be taken seriously and answered respectfully. Conversation may include talk about sex, biology, consent, and systemic oppression of LGBT+ communities, all gauged to the pre-teen and young-teen students present.
We will use mentimeter (www.menti.com) for questions and reference the Genderbread Person from www.genderbread.org.
