1-2 hours per week. Students are expected to come to class with the reading already finished. They can expect to read between 100-300 pages of a graphic novel each week before class. We will have discussion posts that will include questions to get students thinking about the book they will be reading that week. I would like for students to interact with at least 2-3 other students on these posts. Discussion posts should be completed by the end of every week (Friday).Class Experience
US Grade 7 - 9
In this ongoing class learners will be reading Young Adult graphic novels that are centered around characters with LGBTQ+ identities. These books will also include people of various races, ethnicities, disabilities, cultures, and much more. My hope is that this class will be a collaborative space where students and I will get to share ideas with each other surrounding the books that we will be engaging with. Learners are expected to come to class with the reading already finished. They can expect to read between 100-300 pages of a graphic novel each week before class. Each week when learners come to class we will be discussing the entire graphic novel they read prior to coming to class. In order to have a fuller scope of each individual book I urge parents to do a search of them. All of the books are suitable for students within the 8-18 year old age range (according to their book ratings!) depending on the child's maturity. I however believe that this class section is best suited for students ages 13-14 (As well as very mature 12 year old's). We will be touching on and discussing topics relating to sexual identities, gender, sexism, racism, discrimination, and much more that require students to be able to handle themselves in appropriate age related manners. Also keep in mind that a few of the books include profanity and some scenes of violence so students should be aware of and comfortable with this before hand. Here is a list of the graphic novels we will be reading (This will be updated as time goes on): Week of March 31st 2023 - Princess Princess Ever After by Kay O'neill Week of April 3rd 2023: Aquicorn Cove by Kay O'Neill Week of April 10th 2023: Magical Boy by The Kao Week of April 17th 2023: Snapdragon by Kat Leyh Week of April 24th 2023: The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag Week of May 1st 2023: The Hidden Witch by Molly Ostertag Week of May 8th 2023: The Midwinter Witch by Molly Ostertag Week of May 15th 2023: As the Crow Flies by Melanie Gillman Week of May 22nd 2023: Cheer Up by Crystal Frasier Week of May 29th 2023: Taproot by Keezy Young This class is a good fit for students who are apart of and have family members who are apart of the community. I want this class to be a safe place for students to learn about the LGBTQ+ community. All I ask is that my students be respectful to me and their classmates as well as participating in the class with open ears and hearts and a willingness to learn from everyone in our class!
