Class Experience

In this ongoing class, my goal is to create a safe space for bisexual and LGBTQ+ teens to make connections and have meaningful discussions. I will be structuring these meetings to function as a peer discussion group in which I guide the conversation but students ultimately bring forward topics that relate to their interests, voice their own opinions, and ask questions of their peers. I will be providing various websites in the External Resources section for bisexual and LGBTQ+ youth to use if students want to research topics for meetings outside of class. Discussion topics may include: the process of coming out, self-care routines, connecting to the bisexual or the broader LGBTQ+ community, navigating the complicated world of sexuality and labels, how media representation affects us, and how gender roles and stereotypes play a role in our lives. I may use some lesson plans and activities from the LGBTQ+ organizations listed below. I am also personally available as a resource for students to message via Outschool to privately ask a question or suggest a class topic. I encourage students to stick around for a few meetings so that our group can get to know each other a little bit and explore multiple subjects, but don't feel an obligation to attend every week.

Parental Guidance
This class is meant to be a discussion group and community for teens who identify as bisexual, LGBTQ+ or exploring their identity, but anyone and everyone is welcome. We will naturally be discussing topics related to sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community. I will be facilitating each conversation and steering each discussion away from explicit material and towards age-appropriate content. I do ask that if students want to bring up a sensitive topic, they either message me privately about it before class where I will use my discretion, or provide a trigger warning before speaking about it during a meeting. My goal is to create a safe space where everyone feels comfortable and accepted, and we create an environment of respect for each of our peers. DISCLAIMER: This class is not meant to be group therapy or replace therapy in any way, and should not be used as such.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am bisexual and non-binary, and my younger brother is also trans and bi, so I do have experience within the LGBTQ+ community and with talking to bisexual or otherwise LGBTQ+ youth. I was involved in both my middle and high school's GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance), and have helped many of my younger friends and peers come to terms with their sexuality, gender identity, or coming out. I have also done research on facilitating a community-based discussion group, both by using Mental Health America's "Support Group Facilitation Guide" and the Bisexual Resource Center's "Growing a Bi+ Community: A Handbook for Facilitators." In terms of specific content, I took a college course on Philosophy of Feminism, which delved into the history of the LGBTQ+ community as well as the struggles we have faced and obstacles we have overcome. In providing the websites and resources that I have linked in the External Resources section, I have read through and watched many of the different educational articles and videos on the websites and hope to utilize these resources further during class meetings by using lesson plans or activities created by these LGBTQ+ organizations. I plan to adapt and continue my research and learning throughout the course to best suit the students' needs and provide additional relevant resources for them to use. Please let me know if there is anything specific I can do that would help your child feel more comfortable so they can have a great class experience!
