Description
Class Experience
Welcome to LGBTQ+ Musical Storytime! During this four-day camp, students will explore the topics of love and family through books, music, and more. Each class will involve sing-a-long activities, a children's book read-aloud, guided discussions, and an interactive art or dance activity with a song by a Queer musician. Throughout the week, the topics covered will help students gain an understanding and appreciation for a diversity of experiences of love and family including LGBTQ+ families....
This class is taught in English.
Teacher Janelle is a Queer educator with a BM in Music Education and over a decade of experience working in music classrooms with students ages 5-18.
- Paper and crayons/markers/pencils - the more colors the better! - Scarf or other small piece of fabric to dance with (optional)
2 hours per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
While all content will be directed in an age-appropriate way, there will be some themes discussed in class that may bring up challenging emotions for students. There will be mentions of the discrimination that LGBTQ+ people have had to face throughout history and continue to face today. You may look into the Day 4 read-aloud book, "Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag" for an idea of the type of content that will be covered. I will be sure to monitor how students are coping with the content during class and I will guide students toward finding the hope, empowerment, change, and community in the stories and concepts we address. Additionally, students should have a safe space during class to move around, dance, etc.
Book read-alouds shown in class: - "When We Love Someone, We Sing to Them" by Ernesto Javier Martínez - "Mama and Mommy and Me in the Middle" by Nina LaCour - "My Maddy" by Gayle E.
