Class Experience

This class is for students who know the basics of cursive, and want to increase their memory, writing speed, and confidence!

After each class, I'll make a post in the Outschool "Classroom" that gives students and parents a summary of what we did that day, what's up next, and suggested but not mandatory homework. At the beginning of every class, I ask students to show me any homework or independent practice they did so I can correct it right away. It's not necessary to complete the homework, but if you're after fast progress, it is a good idea to do it.

Here's an outline of what to expect, but this can change! I customize each of these private classes to suit each student's needs, so you may have a different experience from this:

Day 1: Top Goals

-I'll ask you about your top priorities with cursive
-We'll also identify which parts of cursive are the most challenging!
-We'll assess your writing together

Day 2: Rules To Remember
-If there are rules in cursive that you don't know about, this is when I'll show you what they are and how they work
-We'll write the trickiest parts of cursive together
-When there's something you can do without my help, I'll give you a chance

Day 3: Self-Checking 101

-I'll point out the more common mistakes so you'll know how to spot them, avoid them, and correct them yourself
-Before you show me what you've written, I'll give you a chance to make any corrections
-I'll try to get to know what you enjoy writing about, and give you homework you hopefully enjoy

Day 4: Tips And Tricks

-We'll re-assess the tricky parts of cursive and see if they're as difficult as they were previously
-I'll give you memory tricks to help you remember the tricky parts
-If my memory tricks don't work for you, we'll create a fun story that helps you remember!

Day 5: Pre-Weekend Check-In

-We'll check in with each other and see how the class, and your cursive, is going
-We can talk about the goal you had in the first class, and if you've surpassed it, or want a new goal, we'll make a change
-If you'd like extra activities to practice over the weekend, I'll outline some new challenges you can do

Weekend Break!

Day 6: Fresh Start!

-If you completed a lot of homework over the weekend, we'll both take a look and correct anything we need to
-After corrections, we'll rewrite tricky parts properly and mark them with a heart symbol or check mark to give you a fast reference
-I'll give you some options of challenges you can pick from

Day 7: Practice, Practice

-We'll play some more games and I'll give you some optional challenges
-These challenges will focus on your weak points without being overwhelming
-When you make a mistake, I'll ask you to circle it, and rewrite it correctly, then mark it with a heart symbol or check mark for quick reference

Day 8: Ultimate Challenges

-I'll give you more difficult versions of cursive challenges you've already been doing
-You'll likely be writing sentences, at this point!
-We'll cover when and where to use cursive upper case letters, and how to connect, or not connect them to the following letter

Day 9: Putting Everything Together

-We'll talk about your future with cursive, and what you can do with it
-I'll ask you to think about occasions in your daily life when you usually use print but could use cursive
-I'll give you my favorite top cursive tips as well

Day 10: What's Next?

-We'll go back to your objectives again; with what you now know, what do you want to do next?
-We'll also discuss ways you can use cursive in your daily life on a regular basis independently
-For the last class, I'll do my best to make it fun!

I've been writing cursive since I was six years old and have an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. In my experience, cursive has been a helpful life skill for writing fast notes, poetry, and essays by hand when taking notes on a laptop isn't permitted or feasible.
