Let's take the frustration out of learning how to spell words by understanding word patterns and spelling rules in a fun, hands-on way. This hands-on spelling class is perfect for students who are in 4th, 5th or 6th grade, ESL students (in this grade level), or advanced 3rd graders who need extra help applying spelling patterns when writing. However, you know your child best! Read below to see if the sample lesson describes where your child is at academically. Students are engaged in learning while using letter tiles. Don't have letter tiles? No problem! Students can use magnet letters or small rectangular cut outs with the letters written on them to create words and words with similar word patterns. Each week we will practice a new spelling and phonics pattern and students will practice reading and writing these words. Each week we will use interactive visuals to learn about spelling rules, practice writing the words, and doing movement activities to stay engaged and excited! What to Expect: Introduce ourselves and build our community. View interactive Google Slides to discuss the weekly spelling pattern and learn about other words with the similar pattern. Practice creating words with the spelling pattern to find a mystery word (Making Words Activity). If we finish early, we will review our spelling words by writing silly sentences! Sample Class: In this Level 3 Spelling Class, a sample class would include making the following words with the letter tiles listed for the week: a, e, e, e, i, d, m, n, r, s, t, t, v WORDS to MAKE: art, arm, date, mean, neat, read, mine, dine, rise, risen, eaten, drive, driven, desire, admire, advice, insert, neater, neatest, meanest, deserve, distant, misread, mistreat, advertise, determine, terminate, interested, advertisement Level 3: In the level 3 class, students will work on word endings, prefixes, suffixes, homophones and compound words that all include challenging spelling patterns. The Science of Reading research supports the historical use of reading instruction featuring word families, phonograms and spelling patterns to help students understand the basics of the alphabetic system. We will sort the words we made into different word family categories and practice reading and writing them. This is an ongoing class. Because this class naturally provides a multilevel approach to teaching spelling, it is appropriate for many different levels of phonics skills. We begin each class creating smaller words, and then combine letters and letter patterns to create more challenging spelling and phonics patterns. Below is the class schedule which shows the letters needed for the lesson. The spelling patterns vary weekly. Class Schedule: ~Week of:~ 3/19 - a, a, e, i, l, n, p, r, s Spelling focus: homophones, "ain, ane, ale, ail" 3/26 - a, a, a, e, i, b, c, h, l, l, p , t Spelling focus: "el, le, al" 4/2 - a, a, e, m, n, p, r, s, t, t Spelling focus: "ear, ame, amp, eam, atter" 4/9 - a, a, e, e, u, c, l, p, p, s Spelling focus: "ause, ace, ap, ape" *Future weeks will be added with the needed letters.* This class is in a series of leveled spelling classes.
