Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Is your child excited about reading? This ongoing class will help spark the joy of reading in each learner. Lessons are structured around activities that will meet each child's individual level. My teaching style encourages confidence in readers through interactive fun games, short read alouds, and creating written sentence puzzles. Topics covered will include "phonics clues" that teach sounding out words with vowel teams, syllable types, heart words (Dolch List), and graphemes (kn, gn,mb, wr, nk,ng). I look forward to meeting my new learners and helping each one become a more fluent reader!
Week 1: double letters -ll, -ss, -ff; graphemes -dge, -tch; vowel teams ai, ay, au, aw; syllable types; Heart Words; board
              games; sentence puzzles; read aloud
Week 2: graphemes -ould, -alk; vowel teams ee, ea; syllable types; heart words; board games; sentence puzzles; read aloud
Week 3: graphemes -ought, aught; vowel teams oa,ow; syllable types; heart words; board games; sentence puzzles; read aloud
Week 4: graphemes igh; vowel teams au, aw; syllable types; heart words; board games; sentence puzzles; read aloud

Hello! My name is Mrs. Theresa Howard. I am a state certified elementary teacher with 25 years of experience in the classroom (K-6). My endorsements include Early Childhood, Reading and ELL (English as a Second Language). My professional background includes classroom teaching grades 1-3, several years as an elementary principal and helping over 170 Outschool learners from around the world become more confident and fluent readers. Please enjoy perusing the different levels of reading classes that I offer.
I am most passionate about helping children build a strong phonics foundation. It is my joy to teach children how to read and to share my love of reading. I implement fun strategies to provide lessons that motivate students to become more fluent readers. My philosophy in teaching is to meet learners where they are and to celebrate their successes each step of the way. In my spare time I enjoy activities with my family and grandchildren, swimming and reading a good book! I look forward to extending these opportunities to more children around the globe!
