Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
Is your child enjoying reading? This class will continue to spark the joy of reading in each learner. Lessons are structured around activities that will meet each child's individual level. My teaching style encourages confidence in readers through interactive games, reading circles and creating written sentence puzzles. This class will include a review of foundational phonics (from previous levels 1-9), blends, digraphs, vowel teams, sight words, vocabulary, decoding multisyllabic words, and recognizing word chunk patterns. I look forward to continuing with my learners and helping each one become a more fluent reader!
Week 1:  Reading circle; breaking long words into syllables for decoding; words with -tion (option);
               words with -eigh (weigh), -ough (through), -tch (stretch); new vocabulary; games; sentence writing
Week 2: Reading circle; multisyllabic words; contractions; words with -ea (each, great); endings in 'y' to 'ies' (puppies);
                compound words; new vocabulary; games; sentence writing
Week 3: Reading circle; multisyllabic words; science/space vocabulary; games; sentence writing
Week 4:  Reading circle; multisyllabic words; words with -ou (ground), -ow (down); new vocabulary; games;
                sentence writing

Hello! My name is Mrs. Theresa Howard. I am a state certified elementary teacher with 25 years of experience in the classroom (K-6). My endorsements include Early Childhood, Reading and ELL (English as a Second Language). My professional background includes classroom teaching grades 1-3, several years as an elementary principal and helping over 170 Outschool learners from around the world become more confident and fluent readers. Please enjoy perusing the different levels of reading classes that I offer.
      I am most passionate about helping children build a strong phonics foundation. It is my joy to teach children how to read and to share my love of reading. I implement fun strategies to provide lessons that motivate students to become more fluent readers. My philosophy in teaching is to meet learners where they are and to celebrate their successes each step of the way. In my spare time I enjoy activities with my family and grandchildren, swimming and reading a good book! I look forward to extending these opportunities to more children around the globe!
